For 150 years, pathology has meant one thing: a doctor, a glass slide, and a microscope. Digital pathology changes the middle part.

From glass to pixels

Instead of peering through an eyepiece, we scan the entire glass slide into an ultra-high-resolution image โ€” a whole-slide image. One slide can be several gigabytes: you can zoom from the whole tissue down to a single nucleus, all in a browser.

Once tissue is data, everything that's good about data becomes possible:

  • Share instantly โ€” a rare case in a village clinic can get a second opinion from a specialist anywhere.
  • Measure objectively โ€” count mitoses or tumour cells by algorithm, not by tired eyes at 5pm.
  • Never lose a slide โ€” no fading, no breaking, no misfiled archive.

Where AI actually helps

The honest version: AI in pathology is not replacing the pathologist. It's a relentless assistant. It pre-screens, flags suspicious regions, and does the boring counting so the human can spend attention on judgement. Why veterinary pathology needs this most
