How much should
my Pug eat?

A Pug lives on about a third of a Labrador’s food. That small budget is exactly why the arithmetic matters here more than in any other breed — and why one dental chew can undo a whole day.

Start here — this is the whole point

In a Pug, body weight is a breathing problem

Most breeds carry extra weight as a joint and lifespan issue. A Pug carries it as an airway issue, and that changes the urgency completely.

Fat around the neck and chest narrows an airway that is already narrow

Pugs are brachycephalic: the skull is foreshortened, but the soft tissue inside it is not. The result is a crowded upper airway — narrow nostrils, an over-long soft palate, a smaller windpipe. That is Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), and it is present to some degree in a large share of the breed.

Excess body fat makes every part of that worse. It adds tissue around the throat and chest wall, reduces how far the chest can expand, and raises the work of breathing in an animal that is already working hard to breathe at rest.

Weight loss is one of the few things an owner can do that measurably improves BOAS signs — without surgery, without drugs. In brachycephalic dogs assessed before and after losing weight, breathing scores improve. There is no supplement, no diet trend and no gadget that comes close to that effect.

A Pug that snores heavily, snorts through walks, gags, tires in a few minutes, or sleeps sitting up with its head raised is not being “a typical Pug”. It is telling you it cannot breathe well. That is a veterinary conversation, and weight is the first lever in it.

Heat is the emergency

Dogs cool themselves by panting. A Pug pants through a compromised airway, so it cools badly — and an overweight Pug cools worse still, because fat insulates. Heatstroke in this breed can develop fast and can be fatal.

Walk in the cool of the day, never in the midday heat, never leave a Pug in a car or a conservatory, and treat heavy distressed panting that does not settle as an emergency.

The spine, too

Pugs commonly have malformed vertebrae — hemivertebrae — and the screw tail is the visible end of the same story. Some develop progressive hind-limb weakness. Extra body weight loads a spine that may already be structurally compromised.

What the scale should say

The breed standard is 6.3–8.2 kg (14–18 lb). Unusually, that is the same for males and females — most breeds set a lower range for bitches.

So what changes your dog’s number is not its sex. It is neuter status, body condition and activity. A 12 kg Pug is not a big-boned Pug; it is around 50% over.

The method

Three steps, same as every breed

The equations do not change between breeds. What changes is how little room for error a small dog gives you.

Step 1

Find the resting number

The energy your Pug burns doing nothing — heart, lungs, brain, temperature. Called RER.

RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75

For 8 kg that is 70 × 4.757 = 333 kcal. The 0.75 power is why a Pug does not eat a quarter of a Labrador’s food despite weighing under a quarter as much — small dogs burn more per kilo, not less.

Step 2

Multiply for real life

Multiply by the factor matching life stage, neuter status and activity to get MER, the daily calories to feed.

Turn calories into grams

Find kcal/kg on the bag — small print near the analysis — then convert.

533 ÷ 3,500 × 1000 = 152 g a day, or 76 g morning and evening.

For a Pug, a kitchen scale is not optional

A 20 g measuring error on a Labrador’s 460 g ration is 4%. The same 20 g error on a Pug’s 152 g ration is 13% — every single day, in the same direction. Scoops and cups cannot resolve a Pug’s portion. Weigh it.

The number that surprises everyone

A Pug is not a small Labrador

Treats should be at most 10% of the day’s calories, and they come out of the food ration, not on top. For an 8 kg Pug that whole allowance is 53 kcal. Here is what that buys.

One chew is two and a half days of treats

A single large dental chew is 263% of an 8 kg Pug’s entire daily treat allowance, and more than a quarter of everything it should eat that day. If you give one, it is not a treat — it is a meal, and the meal has to shrink to pay for it.

What to use instead

  • Train with the dog’s own kibble. Weigh the day’s ration into a tub each morning and reward from it. Costs nothing extra.
  • Break treats up. A Pug does not need a whole biscuit. A crumb is the same event to the dog.
  • Vegetables for volume. Green beans, cucumber, plain cooked carrot.
  • One tub, whole household. Everything anyone gives comes out of it.

Never feed — toxic to dogs

Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants · xylitol / birch sugar in sugar-free gum, sweets and some peanut butters · chocolate · onion, garlic, leek and chives in any form · macadamia nuts · alcohol · raw bread dough · cooked bones. In a dog this small the dose per kilo is far higher than in a big breed, so a quantity that would merely worry you in a Labrador can be serious here. Ring your vet or an animal poison line immediately — do not wait for symptoms.

The core idea

A puppy is not a small adult

The energy multiplier falls from about 4.2× resting at eight weeks to 1.6× in a neutered adult. In a Pug the whole journey is over faster than in a big breed — growth is essentially finished by nine to twelve months.

The part that catches people out

A 6-month-old Pug at 5.9 kg needs about 671 kcal a day. The same dog, full-grown at 8 kg and neutered, needs about 533 kcal.

The half-grown puppy eats roughly 26% more than the finished adult, while weighing three-quarters as much. Peak intake is around five to six months, and then it comes down — fast.

Keep feeding the six-month amount at twelve months and you are overfeeding by about a quarter, every day, in a breed that cannot afford it.

Where the milestones sit

  • 0–4 weeks — nursing. All from milk. Energy need per kilo is the highest it will ever be.
  • 4–8 weeks — weaning. Milk replaced by softened puppy food.
  • Under 4 months. Around 3–4× resting. Very small puppies also risk low blood sugar — four meals a day, never a long gap.
  • 4 months to adult. Steps down toward 2× resting.
  • 9–12 months. Growth finished. Switch to adult food — much earlier than a large breed.
  • Adult. 1.6× neutered, 1.8× entire.

Four weeks or four months? Both matter, and they are easy to mix up

Four weeks is the weaning milestone — solid food begins, and energy need per kilogram of body weight peaks.

Four months is the multiplier milestone, where the feeding factor steps down from about 3× resting toward 2×. That is the one that changes your arithmetic.

Two published methods, one answer

The WSAVA multiplier and the European FEDIAF equations are separate systems. For an 8 kg Pug: the multiplier gives 533 kcal, FEDIAF’s typical-pet-dog figure gives 523 kcal. Under 2% apart.

Weights are typical for the breed, not targets. Calories come from the NRC growth equation. A Pug is a small breed — the large-breed calcium restrictions do not apply here, and growth finishes far sooner.

Four meals until four months

Small-breed puppies have little glycogen reserve and can drop their blood sugar between meals. Signs are wobbliness, weakness, glazed eyes or collapse — a veterinary emergency. Four meals a day until about four months, then three, then two.

No large-breed food, no calcium

Large-breed puppy diets exist to slow growth and cap calcium in dogs that will finish at 30 kg+. A Pug needs none of that — feed a food carrying an AAFCO or FEDIAF growth statement, and do not add calcium or any mineral supplement to a complete diet.

Adult food at 9–12 months

Pugs finish growing far earlier than big breeds. Staying on energy-dense puppy food past twelve months is a common route into an overweight adult. Transition over 7–10 days.

Be honest about the “active” row

A brachycephalic dog tires quickly and overheats easily, and most Pugs genuinely are not high-activity animals. Two short walks and a garden is the 1.6× row, not 2.0×. Overestimating activity is the single most common way owners of this breed accidentally overfeed.

If your Pug is overweight

This is the common case, not the exception. Pugs are consistently among the breeds with the highest recorded overweight and obesity rates in veterinary practice.

Never feed to the weight your Pug is. Feed to the weight it should be.

An 11 kg Pug fed at 1.6× its current weight gets 676 kcal a day. The correct figure — resting energy for its 8 kg target — is 333 kcal.

That is a 344 kcal daily surplus: the dog is being fed roughly double what it needs, and the calculation is what keeps it there. Every calorie chart on the internet will hand you the wrong number if you type in today’s weight.

Overweight

You must press to find ribs. The body is a straight tube or barrel from above. Fat pads over the lower back and at the tail base, and often a thickened neck.

A barrel-shaped Pug is not “just how Pugs look”

This breed is so often seen overweight that the overweight shape has become many people’s mental picture of a normal Pug. It is not. A Pug in proper condition has a visible waist behind the ribs and a belly that tucks up. Judge with your hands and ignore what the internet has trained your eye to expect.

How a reduction plan works

  1. Set the target with your vet. Breed standard is 6.3–8.2 kg for both sexes.
  2. Feed resting energy for the target weight. Aiming for 8 kg means about 333 kcal a day — roughly 115 g of a light formula at 2,900 kcal/kg.
  3. Aim for 1–2% of body weight per week. For an 11 kg Pug that is 110–220 g a week. Reaching 8 kg takes around 18 weeks. It is a season’s project, not a fortnight’s.
  4. Weigh monthly at the vet. Kitchen scales are fine for a dog this size — weigh yourself, then yourself holding the dog.
  5. Use a proper reducing diet. At 333 kcal there is little room to lose nutrients. A high-protein, high-fibre reducing food keeps the dog full and protects lean muscle; simply feeding less of a normal food can leave it short.
  6. Split into three small meals. Same food, more events, and easier on a flat-faced dog than one large bowl.

What losing weight actually buys a Pug

  • Easier breathing. The one intervention an owner controls that measurably improves BOAS signs.
  • Better heat tolerance. Less insulation, less work, lower heatstroke risk.
  • Less load on a malformed spine and on the knees and hips.
  • Lower anaesthetic risk. Brachycephalic dogs are already higher-risk patients; obesity compounds it, and many Pugs need anaesthesia at some point for airway, eye or dental surgery.
  • More years. In the lifetime study on restricted feeding — run in Labradors, but the biology is not breed-specific — leaner dogs lived a median 1.8 years longer.

Practical

How to feed a flat face

A Pug does not eat like other dogs. The muzzle is too short to reach into a deep bowl properly, and the effort of eating and breathing at once causes problems no Labrador owner ever thinks about.

Use a shallow, wide bowl

Deep or narrow bowls force a flat-faced dog to push its nose in and interrupt its own breathing. A wide, shallow dish or a flat plate lets a Pug eat without burying its airway. Cheap change, immediate difference.

Slow the eating down

Pugs gulp, and a gulping brachycephalic swallows a lot of air. That air causes bloating, burping and regurgitation. A slow-feeder bowl or a snuffle mat turns a two-minute meal into fifteen and cuts the air swallowed — with no change in calories.

Bringing food back up is not normal

Regurgitation — undigested food returning effortlessly soon after a meal — is common in brachycephalics and is sometimes linked to hiatal hernia. Common is not the same as normal. If it happens regularly, it needs investigating rather than managing with smaller bowls.

Not around exercise or heat

Leave a gap between meals and walks, and never feed a Pug that is still panting hard from exertion or heat. Let the breathing settle first.

Keep the face fold clean and dry

Food and moisture collect in the nose wrinkle and cause skin-fold dermatitis. Wipe the fold after meals and dry it properly. This is a feeding-hygiene job as much as a grooming one.

Mind the teeth

A Pug has the same number of teeth as a much larger dog in a far shorter jaw, so crowding and dental disease are common. Painful teeth change how a dog eats. If your Pug becomes fussy, drops food or chews on one side, have the mouth checked before you change the diet.

Reading the bag, and converting to grams

Everything here is in calories, because calories are the only unit that transfers between foods.

Find the energy density

Look for kcal/kg or ME (metabolisable energy), usually in small print near the analytical constituents. If it is given per 100 g, multiply by 10. If the bag does not state it at all, email the manufacturer — and count that against the brand.

Worked example. An 8 kg neutered Pug needs 533 kcal. The bag says 3,500 kcal/kg.
533 ÷ 3,500 × 1000 = 152 g a day — 76 g morning and 76 g evening.

Calculated requirements assume a healthy dog. Airway surgery and its recovery, hiatal hernia, chronic regurgitation, dental disease, spinal disease, skin disease, allergy, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, pancreatitis and hypothyroidism all change the calorie target, the nutrient profile, or both. If your Pug has a diagnosed condition, is on long-term medication, is losing or gaining weight unexpectedly, or has changed how it eats, the diet is a clinical decision. Take this chart to your vet as a starting point — not as a substitute for one.
